A long history of service

HSF Health Plan is the registered company of the Hospital Saturday Fund.

The past of any organisation is important and when it goes back to 1873 it demonstrates a stability and a long record of service which still counts for something over 135 years later. The Hospital Saturday Fund was started by the Victorian social reformer, the Twelfth Earl of Meath, to give working people an opportunity to contribute to the upkeep of their local hospitals. Historical records show that regular givers did enjoy some ‘benefits’ at their local hospitals in these early years.

Supporting families in Ireland

Evolving over the years to become a health cash plan, a form of low-cost healthcare insurance, HSF Health Plan started providing its services in Ireland in 1949. By offering a range of low cost every day health benefits meant that the provision of health insurance was available to a wider audience. Today, HSF Health Plan covers over 100,000 Irish people, with money payouts towards everyday health costs. Over 900 organisations in Ireland from the voluntary, public and private sectors, offer HSF Health Plan to their staff. In Ireland HSF Health Plan is regulated by the Health Insurance Authority (HIA) and the Department of Health and Children.

Our aims

HSF Health Plan has always had two primary purposes:

• Provide the largest possible number of generous health benefits in a variety of low cost health cash plan policies, covering whole families.

• Continue to uphold the aims and ideals of the founders and give away its profits each year to medical charities, hospitals, hospices and to some individuals whose ill health or disability has caused difficulties or who may need a piece of medical equipment to make life more comfortable.

Charitable status

In 2008, the Hospital Saturday Fund applied for, and was made, a registered charity, with HSF Health Plan as the trading subsidiary. In this way HSF Health Plan is able to donate more surplus monies, via Gift Aid, to the charitable arm resulting in more charitable donations across the UK and Ireland.
